A resource designed to spotlight “concrete examples of high-quality teaching and learning practices,” the New Jersey Department of Education’s new Educator Exemplars and Early Learning Experts Video Library features Beekman’s classroom as an exemplar of best practice in kindergarten literacy.

A video compilation offers viewers a glimpse into Beekman’s whole- and small-group literacy activities and Dramatic Play centers. It also provides a peek at her children engaging in Tools Study Buddy activities, such as Buddy Checking.

In accompanying materials posted alongside the video, the department articulates the very good reasons why Beekman’s classroom is featured, including:

  • Integration of play into center activities
  • Alignment with New Jersey’s ELA standards, and
  • Effective teacher practices in regard to decoding, phonemic awareness, and oral language development

Michelle Beekman’s implementation of quintessential Tools literacy activities has made her classroom a model of exemplary kindergarten teaching and best practice in the state of New Jersey. We are delighted to see her recognized!
